What is the best flea spray for your dog?

WHAT IS THE BEST FLEA REPELLER FOR YOUR DOG?

The best anti-flea method for your dog is to know very well what the animal's anti-parasitic needs are and the wide range of anti-flea products that exist in Glu Glu Pet.

At Glu Glu Pet we show you which are the best flea repellents for dogs and why it is so important to protect our best friend against these parasites.

All dog owners have suffered from them at some time, to a greater or lesser extent. Small, fast, almost imperceptible, especially in animals with dark fur, and extremely annoying, fleas are the most common external parasite in our pets.

The flea is an insect from 1.5 to 3.3 mm. long, dark in color, which feeds on the blood of its host.

They do not have wings but their legs are adapted for jumping, and they can jump a distance of up to 200 times the length of their body, about 33 cm. approximately, making them the best jumper among animals relative to their size.

Their body is almost flat laterally, which makes it easy for them to move between the hairs or feathers of the animals they parasitize.

As we already mentioned in our Antiparasitic Guide, which we place at the end of this article as a reminder for our readers, fleas are transmitters of various diseases and can seriously harm the health of our dogs.

THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE FLEA:

It is important to know the biological cycle of the flea to combat it effectively, since not all products are capable of eliminating fleas in each of the four phases through which they develop: egg, larva, pupa and adult.

The flea adapts completely to the environment, adjusting its life cycle according to the circumstances that surround it.

From the egg stage to the adult stage it can take from 2 weeks to 6 months, or even more, this makes its elimination considerably complicated.

In domestic environments where temperatures are not very variable, they take between 3 and 6 weeks to complete the cycle.

Adult females deposit between 15 and 20 eggs per day on the body of the animal, in this case our dog.

These eggs do not adhere to the fur but fall and spread throughout the environment, especially where the dog rests: bed, sofa, carpet...etc.

The eggs take between 2 and 20 days to hatch, giving rise to the larval stage.

The larvae are tiny worms that feed on the feces of adult fleas, digested blood and other organic remains, and remain sheltered under carpets or furniture, in cracks, or if they are outdoors, they usually hide in sand or gravel; This phase can last from 1 to 3 weeks approximately.

Subsequently, the larva passes to the pupa stage, wrapping itself in a cocoon made with saliva and debris from the environment: hair, dust, small fibers, etc., and inside it develops into an adult flea.

The flea can remain inside the cocoon for about 5 days, or up to several months if it does not detect the right conditions to go outside: low temperatures, there are no animals nearby.

THE MOST EFFECTIVE ANTIPARASITIC AGAINST FLEAS:

When it comes to preventing and combating a flea infestation, we must properly choose the products that we will use according to the circumstances of each specific case.

They must always be quality and safe products for our pets and the environment; We must not forget that antiparasitics are powerful chemicals, before using any product we must consult with the veterinarian for approval.

BELOW IN GLU GLU PET WE ANALYZE SOME OF THE MOST RECOMMENDED FLEA ANTI-FLEAS TO ELIMINATE THESE ANNOYING PARASITES:

PIPETTES:

ADVANTIX:

Give your dog the protection it deserves with Advantix®, the pipette that eliminates fleas and ticks.

It also reduces the risk of Leishmania infection.

Parasites such as fleas, ticks, biting lice, and other flying insects are more than just a nuisance, they can cause allergic reactions or dermatitis, cause secondary bacterial infections, and even transmit diseases and other parasites.

A concrete example is the case of leishmaniasis, which reaches our dogs through the bite of sandflies.

When sandflies ingest blood from an infected dog, they take parasites with them and transmit them to a new host when they bite.

In Spain, the presence of sandflies is constant and there are more and more dogs infected, clinically healthy or sick, by Leishmania.

Advantix® is a pipette-shaped dewormer for dogs that kills fleas and ticks by simple contact, which means that it is not necessary for the parasites to bite the animal to be affected by its active ingredients, unlike other dewormers.

In addition, Advantix® has a repellent effect against ticks, sandflies, mosquitoes and stable flies.

This easy-to-apply external-use treatment is a simple solution to protect dogs of all sizes and puppies from seven weeks of age and weighing at least 1.5kg.

Advantix® is an external antiparasitic for dogs formulated with two active ingredients, imidacloprid and permethrin, which act in combination against fleas, ticks, sandflies, mosquitoes, lice and stable flies so that you can protect your dog as it deserves.

The Advantix® pipette, with its repellent effect, is very easy to use and remains effective even if the animal gets wet.

When the content of the pipette is applied to the dog's skin, the product is distributed over the entire surface of its body.

In dogs up to 10 kg in weight: separate the coat between the shoulders until the skin is visible. Place the tip of the pipette on the skin and squeeze the pipette firmly several times until the entire content is emptied onto the skin.

In dogs weighing more than 10 kg: the entire content of the pipette should be applied evenly between four points on the dorsal line of the animal, from the shoulder area to the base of the tail.

At Glu Glu Pet we show you the most frequently asked questions about the use of Advantix:

What is the difference between Advantix® and external antiparasitic tablets?

Advantix® is a spot-on treatment that is applied directly to your dog's skin to kill fleas and ticks by simple contact.

It also repels ticks, sandflies, mosquitoes and stable flies.

On the other hand, with external antiparasitic tablets, the parasites have to bite the dog to be exposed to the medicine present in the animal's blood.

Advantix® kills fleas and ticks on dogs without the need for them to bite, reducing irritation and the risk of disease transmission.

How long does Advantix® last?

Advantix® should be applied every 4 weeks to prevent infestations by fleas, ticks, stable flies, and mosquitoes.

Advantix® has a repellent effect against sandflies; to protect your dog against them, apply Advantix® every 3 weeks for Phlebotomus perniciosus.

Can I let children pet my dog, even if I have administered Advantix®?

Yes. They will only have to wait for the application point to dry.

Why do I need a product that, in addition to killing ticks, repels them?

Treatments that kill and repel ticks reduce the risk of these types of parasites getting on your dog and biting him.

In this way, the risk of disease transmission is reduced.

Can I use Advantix® to treat my cat?

No. Advantix® is indicated for dogs, but is toxic to cats due to the unique physiology of these animals and their inability to metabolize certain compounds.

Can I use Advantix® to deworm dogs if I also have a cat at home?

Yes. If your cat has direct contact with the dog treated with Advantix® or if he usually licks it, keep them apart for 48 hours. If in doubt, consult your veterinarian.

My dog does not leave the house. Still, should I use Advantix®?

Of course. Even pets that spend most of their time indoors should be treated with dog dewormers, as fleas and ticks can enter your home without you even realizing it.

I have only detected fleas on one of my dogs. Is it really necessary to treat everyone?

Without a doubt.

Fleas can propel themselves 18 inches (47 cm) and jump up to 6.5 inches (16.5 cm), so every dog in your household should be treated. Even if only one of them has fleas, soon they will all be infested. If your pet goes untreated, these parasites will continue their life cycle, feeding, laying eggs, and contaminating your home.

Can I put Advantix® on my dog if he is taking medication?

If you are medicating your dog, consult your veterinarian to find out which are the most suitable products to use in combination.

How should I store and dispose of Advantix®?

Store Advantix® in a dry place below 30°C, prevent it from freezing and always keep it out of the reach of children.

Dispose of the Advantix® pipette according to local regulations for the disposal of veterinary medicinal products.

When can I bathe my dog if I have applied the Advantix® pipette?

It is advisable to wash and let your pet dry well before applying the external antiparasitic for dogs.

If you have to bathe him between applications, it is best to wait at least two weeks after applying the product.

To bathe him, use a special soap-free shampoo for dogs.

From what age can I treat my dog with Advantix®?

Advantix® can be used in dogs from seven weeks of age and weighing at least 1.5 kg.

Why do I keep seeing fleas on my dog after applying Advantix®?

Although Advantix® kills the fleas present on your dog, there may still be some of these parasites in your home and they will jump on you after receiving treatment.

There is no product to repel fleas.

If you continue to detect fleas, it means that the environment is contaminated.

Fortunately, thanks to Advantix®, these new parasites will also be killed on contact as soon as they jump on your pet.

When fleas die, they can no longer remain hidden in the dog's skin, so you may also spot dying parasites that surface on your pet's fur.

ANTIPARASITE COLLARS:

SEREST:

With Seresto®, up to 8 months of protection against fleas and ticks.

It's not like most flea and tick collars.

It has been developed using a revolutionary mechanism of action: the active ingredients of Seresto® are released steadily and adequately for up to 8 months, ensuring complete protection, offering your dog or cat up to 8 months of protection against fleas and ticks and reducing also the risk of Leishmania infantum infection in dogs.

You can also buy antiparasitic in Glu Glu Pet with combined action that, apart from fleas, also fight ticks and lice, as would be the case with the Seresto collar:

With Seresto®, protect your dog against fleas and ticks for up to 8 months.

The Seresto® dog collar eliminates fleas from your dog and protects the animal's immediate environment by inhibiting the development of flea larvae; In addition, it repels and eliminates ticks and reduces the risk of Leishmania infantum infection in dogs.

Seresto® is different from conventional flea and tick collars.

It uses a revolutionary mechanism of action that allows a controlled release of adequate doses of its active ingredients for up to 8 months.

This provides excellent protection for your dog, not only because it eliminates fleas and ticks, but also because it repels ticks and prevents these repelled ticks from taking a blood meal, which helps protect your pet from the diseases that these parasites can transmit.

It also reduces the risk of infection by Leishmania infantum in dogs, the parasite that causes leishmaniasis and is transmitted by sandflies.

Today, most flea and tick treatments require monthly applications, which sometimes makes it hard to remember when to reapply the treatment.

As a consequence, we can leave our dog unprotected from fleas and ticks and, more importantly, from the diseases that these parasites can transmit (Erlichia and Babesia).

Seresto® now offers you a simple solution to this problem, since it protects your dog for up to 8 months with a single application.

Seresto® is not like most flea and tick collars for dogs.

At first glance, Seresto® may look like any other pet collar, but it's actually much more than that.

The collar slowly releases two active ingredients, imidacloprid and flumethrin, into the lipid (fat) layer of your dog's skin and hair.

In this way, it kills fleas and repels and eliminates ticks that come into contact with your pet.

At Glu Glu Pet we show you the most frequently asked questions about the use of Seresto:

What is Seresto®?

Seresto® is a collar that protects your cat against fleas and ticks for up to 8 months.

It eliminates these parasites by contact, without the need for them to bite.

You will no longer have to be aware of applying the deworming treatment for cats on a regular basis, nor worry if you forget to do it.

Why is Seresto® different from other antiparasitic collars against fleas and ticks?

The Seresto® necklace, thanks to its revolutionary technology, can release adequate and constant doses of its active ingredients for prolonged periods.

These active ingredients are transferred to your dog's skin and hair and spread throughout his body to protect him against ticks and fleas for up to eight months.

What are the active ingredients of Seresto®?

Seresto® contains two active ingredients: imidacloprid, which kills flea larvae and adult fleas, and flumethrin, which repels and kills ticks.

It is the only product on the market that includes this combination of active ingredients that act synergistically.

How long does Seresto® for dogs take to take effect?

Seresto® begins to have an effect within 48 hours after its application on fleas and between 24 and 48 hours after its application on ticks.

Why do I still see a tick on my dog, even though he is wearing a Seresto® collar?

Ticks present on the dog before treatment with the Seresto® collar may not be eliminated in the first 48 hours after collar application, so they may remain attached and visible.

It is recommended to remove them before applying it.

If more than 48 hours have passed after the application, it is possible that the parasites jump on the dog when passing by them.

The active principles of Seresto® act by contact, which means that the ticks must touch the dog's fur.

Once this contact has occurred, they will be deleted.

My dog has started to bite the collar, should I be worried?

The vast majority of the active ingredients are found within the matrix of the necklace.

In the unlikely event that the animal ingests a collar, symptoms such as mild gastrointestinal discomfort may occur.

Consultation with a veterinarian would be advisable, especially if the dog has ingested the entire collar.

Also, keep in mind that if your dog has managed to get the collar into his mouth, you may not have tightened it enough. Ideally, two fingers fit between the collar and the neck.

Can Seresto® be used for puppies?

Seresto® can be used in puppies from seven weeks of age.

Should I leave a rest time between one collar and another?

No. In fact, it is important that you put on the new collar without delay to ensure that your dog is protected at all times.

The Seresto® collar that I have purchased does not give off any odour. Does it mean it doesn't work?

No. Seresto® is odourless, so you will not notice any unpleasant smell.

Normally, to activate an antiparasitic collar for dogs it is necessary to stretch it. Do I have to do the same with Seresto®?

No. You do not need to stretch the collar to activate it. Seresto® begins to have an effect within 48 hours after its application on fleas and between 24 and 48 hours after its application on ticks.

Other brands recommend rubbing the collar against the dog's tail and abdomen before putting it on. Should I do the same with Seresto®?

No. Seresto® doesn't work that way, so you don't need to rub it against your dog's fur. You just have to put the collar around your pet's neck and check that you have adjusted it correctly.

The necklace will do the rest.

What do I do if the collar gets dirty? If it gets muddy, will it still protect my dog from fleas and ticks?

We are not aware that the presence of mud negatively influences the release of the active ingredients of Seresto® or, therefore, its effectiveness.

A few small stains shouldn't be a problem.

Mud could interfere if it is thick and forms a layer between the collar and your dog's fur.

Many families with outdoor pets have tried the Seresto® Dog Deworming Collar with no observed reduction in effectiveness.

If the necklace gets dirty, you can clean it with a damp cloth.

Can I attach a leash to the Seresto® collar? And put a plaque with my dog's name on it?

You should not attach any leash to the collar as the pulling force exerted by your pet could open the safety mechanism. Use a normal collar to attach the leash, there is no problem using a normal collar together with the Seresto® collar.

You can add a plate with your dog's name on the buckle ring.

Is Seresto® for dogs waterproof? Should I take my dog's collar off if it gets wet?

If your dog is going to swim or be bathed, you do not need to remove the Seresto® collar.

The active ingredients are found within the matrix of the necklace and are hydrophobic, so they are not lost when swimming or getting wet; instead, they spread through your dog's naturally water-resistant coat of skin and hair. Even if some of the active ingredients are diluted during the bath, the collar will quickly replenish them so that your pet is protected again.

It is recommended to use a soap-free shampoo for bathing.

How often can I let my dog swim if he is wearing a Seresto® collar?

Seresto® is waterproof*, so it will remain effective even if you wash your pet with a soap-free shampoo with non-detergent ingredients, a soap-free dog shampoo, or if he swims or gets wet in the rain.

You must bear in mind that intense and prolonged exposure to water or the frequent use of shampoos can reduce the duration of the activity of Seresto®.

What happens if my dog catches the Seresto® collar on something?

Seresto® has a safety closing mechanism.

In the extremely rare event that your dog becomes trapped, the collar will widen or open to quickly release your dog.

The collar for small dogs has a double safety mechanism and is also designed with a predetermined breaking point.

Can the Seresto® collar be used together with normal collars?

Of course. Seresto® can be used in conjunction with the regular collar without reducing its effectiveness. You will only have to check that the Seresto collar is in contact with your dog's skin, that it is next to the normal fabric collar.

My dog scratches at the collar area, which causes redness and irritation. What I can do?

Some dogs are not used to wearing a collar, so it can cause minor discomfort such as itching, redness and hair loss in the area of friction.

These symptoms usually disappear after one or two weeks without the need to remove it, as the dog gets used to wearing it.

In rare cases, application site reactions such as dermatitis, inflammation, eczema or lesions may occur. In these cases, it may be advisable to remove the collar temporarily, until the symptoms have resolved. Visit your vet if symptoms worsen or do not go away.

(Also check that the collar is not too tight (two fingers should always fit between the dog's neck and the Seresto® collar).

How often should I check the fit of the Seresto® collar on a growing puppy?

Each puppy grows at a different rate, so it is advisable to check the collar daily or every other day and readjust it if necessary.

Can I take the collar off for a couple of months and put it back on later? Will it still work?

This method of application has not been tested and may affect the level of protection your pet receives.

For the best protection against fleas and ticks, Seresto® should be used year-round.

If you remove the Seresto® collar in a timely manner, to wash it, you will be able to put it back on without problems.

How should I dispose of the Seresto® Dog Collar?

Used collars or any of their components must be disposed of in accordance with local regulations.

SCALIBUR:

The Scalibor collar is the first antiparasitic for dogs on the market that protects against sandflies, ticks and fleas for up to 12 months: 2 months against sandflies, 6 against ticks and up to 4 months against fleas.

Its special composition has a repellent effect against sandflies, the transmitting agent of Leishmaniasis, and culicids of the Culex pipiens complex, the transmitting agent of canine dirofilariosis or "heartworms".

This antiparasitic collar for dogs releases its active ingredient, deltamethrin, from the moment it is placed on your dog, being fully effective one week after putting it on.

The mode of application of deltamethrin through the Scalibor collar is based on direct release on the dog's skin, so its safety is very high.

The Scalibor collar is completely waterproof, so it does not lose its effectiveness because it gets wet on rainy days.

With this collar there is no evaporation, as it happens with the rest, which achieves even greater efficiency.

As it does not act by evaporation, this product does not produce odors, so neither you nor your dog will realize that it is wearing it.

The Scalibor collar is especially important for dogs that live in rural settings, as they have a higher exposure to parasites.

It is ideal for all dogs, including those that live indoors, for optimal protection against parasites.

Your dog, whether it is a puppy of seven weeks, small, medium or large, will benefit from the first day of the collar and you will not worry throughout the most active season of these parasites.

ADVANTAGES OF THE SCALIBOR NECKLACE:

  • Scalibor antiparasitic collar for dogs of all sizes.
  • Protects against mosquitoes of any kind, including Leishmania-transmitting sandflies (12 months), ticks for up to 6 months; and from fleas up to 4 months.
  • Repels heartworm transmitting culicids.
  • Your dog will be able to enjoy the entire active season of parasites without suffering the annoying effects of bites.
  • Your family and other animals will be much safer without the evaporation that other collars produce.

Protect your dog from mosquitoes that can cause Leishmaniasis, ticks and fleas for up to 12 months with the Scalibor antiparasitic collar.

The collar slowly releases two active ingredients, imidacloprid and flumethrin, into the lipid (fat) layer of your dog's skin and hair.

In this way, it kills fleas and repels and eliminates ticks that come into contact with your pet.

At Glu Glu Pet we show you the most frequently asked questions about the use of Scalibur:

Could the 65 cm scalibor collar for 12 months be used by my 9 month old puppy?

The ideal and most effective for your dog would be the lower size which is for dogs weighing less than 8 kg.

I have a two-month-old German shepherd who is being treated for leishmaniasis with alpurinol. I bought him the scalibor collar. I would like to know if he is protected or would he need something else. Besides, I also give him internal deworming pills.

In this case you should consult your veterinarian since it is very small. Scalicor does not protect 100% but it is your veterinarian who will tell you if it is necessary to combine with a pipette or use a repellent when walking.

I have 4 bitches and they play a lot biting their necks, I wanted to know if it is convenient to put it on in case it can be toxic or to opt for another option. They also bathe a lot, they have a swimming pool and they really like the water from the hose and sprinklers.

Accidental ingestion of the necklace can cause neurological symptoms, hypersalivation, muscle tremors...etc.

In this case, we recommend the Seresto brand, which is much safer in case of ingestion, the only clinical symptoms that have occurred according to clinical studies, some symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting.

I leave the link:

I have a 3-month-old German Shepherd, and I don't know whether to buy him the 48cm or the 65cm Scalibor. What would you recommend?

You have to measure your dog's neck to make sure. They usually need the large 65cm, but measure it.

I have a 2 year old mini dachshund and he sleeps in the same bed as us, can he still use the scalibor collar?

There is no problem, problems are only known in case of ingestion.

For a dog like a greyhound that has a fairly narrow neck, what size do you recommend?

To choose the correct size you have to measure the contour of the neck and depending on what it measures you would have to choose the size 48 cm or 65 cm.

I have a 1 1/2 year old Maltese who weighs 3.5Kg and I have been putting the frontline Tri-Act pipettes on him. I wanted to know the possibility of being able to put an antiparasitic collar on him, this and the Seresto have been recommended to me, but I have also heard that small dogs with white hair can give him an allergy. What do you recommend?

We recommend the Seresto necklace, I leave you the link so you can consult.

It is one of the most effective products on the market.

I have to buy the scalibor for my dog, but since it's summer and he goes into the river for 5 minutes or so every day, I don't know if it's better to wait until it's not so hot and he doesn't go in (take the pipette too) for the issue of losing its effectiveness. What do you recommend?

If you are going to wet your dog every day, perhaps the Seresto collar is more effective.

Pipettes also lose efficiency.

I have a Golden Retriever puppy who is 2 and a half months old, he is very big and weighs 10 kilos. He already has the first 2 vaccines and we are starting to take him out little by little, we want to take him to the beach. Would this necklace be good for you to avoid mosquito bites? Which size? Do you recommend this or the Seresto brand?

Both antiparasitic collars are of very good quality according to the opinion of our clients.

This one in particular can be used since it can be used from 2 months.

To choose the size you would have to measure the contour of the neck.

I have a female Maltese bichon of 2, 300gr and 8 months old. I would like to know if I could put the Scalibur collar on it.

Of course you can use the scalibor collar for your dog, it is a very effective antiparasitic.

You only have to take into account the measurement of your neck to choose the size 48 cm or 65 cm.

I recently bought the collar, can it be combined with the frontline tri-act pipettes? To be more efficient, it is a 30 kg mongrel bitch.

Yes, you can combine the Scalibor collar with antiparasitic pipettes to increase efficiency and ensure that your dog is well protected.

I would like to know if the Scalibor collar is compatible with natural repellent sprays.

Of course, you can combine both items to increase the protection of your pet.

I have a medium sized pinsher weighing about 5-6kg. I would like to know if it is advisable for this type of dog or, on the contrary, the Seresto. In case of buying the Seresto, since it is not valid for the mosquito with which pipettes they advise me to accompany it.

Both the Scalibor collar and the Seresto collar would be compatible with your dog.

Both protect and are highly effective against fleas, ticks and mosquitoes of any kind.

You can also combine it with any pipette from the Advantix and Frontline range.

We leave you the following links:

I wanted to know if this collar is true that it is toxic for my 2kg Yorkshire. Today, I put Advantix pipettes on it, but a necklace is more comfortable for me. Do you recommend a collar that protects me from fleas, ticks but also leishmaniasis and can I put it on him?

The Scalibor collar is of high quality, and exerts great protection against fleas, ticks and any type of mosquito.

We recommend that you buy the size 48 cm.

Spray, Sprayers and Dust.

Flea collars, pipettes and deworming tablets are an effective tool to prevent parasites such as fleas, lice and ticks from taking over your pet's skin.

But when they have already done so and the animal shows obvious signs of discomfort, you have to resort to antiparasitic sprays, which eliminate them quickly.

Its action is immediate, but its application is somewhat more complicated than that of pipettes; While these are applied drop by drop to various points on the skin, the sprays should be sprayed against the grain, trying to reach all areas.

The treatment should be repeated periodically.

In summer, when the insects are more active, it is recommended to do it every two or three weeks. If you opt for a natural insect repellent spray, such as those from the Menforsan range, you will have to repeat the operation every day for a week and then a couple of times a month.

Each product has specific indications, follow the recommendations of each brand to achieve an effective treatment.

If you use an antiparasitic spray you will be cleaning the animal's skin, but it will be useless if you do not deworm its environment.

You can use antibacterial detergents to clean your house, environment dewormers (there are odorless ones) or sanitizing habitat cleaners for pets.
