Those of us who have pets know that no matter how small they are, we like them to be as well cared for as possible, so we leave you a list of some of the most typical diseases and damages in hamsters so that you can identify them and know how to act accordingly:
Wet tail: This disease is identified because, as its name indicates, it usually has a wet tail, it is generally associated with diarrhea due to stress and an excess of fresh food such as vegetables, so we must give it dry food, in cases serious, we must go to a veterinarian so that he will probably give us antibiotics.
Pneumonia: it is detected by the typical symptoms of respiratory problems (runny nose, rhinitis, sneezing, etc.) and we must be careful and keep our animals away from sources of cold and humidity.
Problems in the cheek pockets (cheeks): we may notice that our hamsters have always swollen abalone but they do not eat food, this will give us clues that they possibly have some type of occlusion that the veterinarian can solve with a VERY simple operation.
Fungus and mites: Many times we see that they scratch uncontrollably, causing damage and even missing hair, and that is due to two factors. The first is a bad substrate, which probably releases particles into the air such as sawdust, which ends up producing mites in the animal, and the second factor is a poor diet, which will lower the responses of the animal's immune system, causing the stress that mites generate, end up producing fungi.
Conclusion: We must be careful where we put the cage, it has to be a dry and warm environment, give it a good diet with quality feed (bearing in mind that some hamsters may have allergies) and maintain proper cage hygiene. With all this we will avoid most of the problems that our hamsters have.
