Born in Connecticut, this Boston terrier was found on the Yale University campus by members of the infantry who were training there. One of the soldiers decided to take charge of Stubby, taking him with him everywhere and gaining the sympathy of the military commanders to such an extent that a short time later he would even go into combat.
Stubby.
Spending a total of 18 months on the front lines and taking part in a total of four offensives and 17 battles, Stubby took it upon himself to detect gas attacks and alert his comrades to the danger.
Already converted into a great tracker, he found several companions isolated in no man's land and a German spy, whom he attacked by biting him.
This last action was the one that granted him the promotion to sergeant, with a uniform full of innumerable medals included.
To speak of Sergeant Stubby is to make him an icon of bravery and loyalty.
Along the same lines, we remember the story of Smoky, another dog that participated in the war, in this case the second world war, surviving it and earning the fame of being one of the bravest war dogs that have ever existed.
Smokey.
The celebrity of this little Yorkshire was mainly due to being the faithful companion of the military William Wynne, precisely the one who baptized him with his name.
Even participating in combat flights in the Pacific, Smoky completed up to 12 air rescue missions and spent countless hours with a soldier's backpack slung.
His work and dedication was recognized with eight combat stars and he was credited with the success of a heroic operation in which 250 soldiers' lives were saved and 40 planes reached their destination.
It would also later be converted into a therapy dog for wounded military and veterans.
It features a life-size bronze sculpture of his name in recognition of his pivotal role.
