We all want to have aquariums with crystal clear water, healthy plants and fish that live comfortably, we start our projects with the greatest of illusions but then we find obstacles along the way.
Why can't I get my aquarium right?
The root of almost all evils in an aquarium are the same: a spike or sudden change in any of the parameters, either because we have made a very large change of water, which should NEVER be done, or because we do not make any changes of water and harmful substances accumulate.
Other of the most common causes of these unwanted organisms getting out of hand, such as algae plagues, snail plagues, worms, etc... They are usually due to either buying from individuals or in places with poor hygiene and in the case of algae, for have wrong parameters or have the aquarium in direct contact with sunlight.
What should I do so that this doesn't happen to me?
Having our own cleaning and control routine is something that will help us enormously in the proper functioning of the aquarium, for this we recommend:
-Usually clean the crystals (we recommend doing it weekly): Depending on the age and maturation of our aquarium, it will require that we clean the crystals and surfaces of the aquarium with ascraper , we should not let it go, since there is a certain type of algae, that once they take root it will cost us much more to remove them.
-Siphon regularly (we recommend doing it weekly): Whenever we clean our aquarium, all that crap usually remains in suspension, so we must then siphon carefully so as not to take any of the tenants with us. The correct way to siphon is to "nail" thesiphon into the substrate and NOT drag it, since that way we would be removing everything that may be in the substrate and not cleaning it, which can do more harm than it can help us. , to refill the water that we have discarded, we will use tap water to which we will add an anti-chlorine conditioner to "purify" the water in our aquarium.
- Measure parameters : Especially when our aquarium has not been in operation for a long time, there are usually peaks of certain parameters (mainly ammonia, nitrite and nitrate), for this we must measure them regularly with reliable tests , at first it is highly recommended to do it every week or every In a few days, as our aquarium matures, it will be less necessary since we will begin to have a healthy parametric balance.
- A water change of 20 – 30% of the aquarium water every week : To correct the accumulation of certain chemical elements, organic substances in decomposition and incidentally to siphon VERY conscientiously, every month we must empty about 20 – 30% of the water in our aquarium, to fill it we will do the same as when we fill the water of the siphons.
- Every month clean the filters : To do this, we first stop the circulation of water in the aquarium, carefully remove the filters and CONSCIOUSLY clean the filtering materials , replacing those that are extremely dirty and the activated carbon if any.
After cleaning the filter, a high population of the beneficial bacteria that inhabit it is inevitably lost, for this we must add bacteria conditioner .
- WARNING : whenever we clean any element of our aquarium we must do it only with WATER, since any other type of material could be deadly for our organisms.
By following these simple tips, we should be able to have a clean and healthy aquarium that we can all enjoy.
