Glu Glu Pet wants to highlight the immortal works of Mr. Cassius Marcellus Coolidge or 'Cash'.
Some of his paintings (replicas or copies) of dogs playing poker or pool can be seen in barbershops, gambling halls, and saloons.
'Cash', as he was also known, was born on September 18, 1844 in New York.
He was the son of successful farmers located north of his hometown. About his childhood there are not many details, but it is known that he had two sisters and two brothers.
Between 19861 and 1863 Cassius Marcellus was at the Liberal Literary Institute in Antwerp where he was added to the catalog of students and workers. In March 1864, the State and National Business University sent him some documents that seemed to be study certificates.
Cassius Marcellus Coolidge had the privilege of founding the first bank in the town of Antwerp, from there his experience in the accounting area developed further. He learned about business law, mathematics, and accounting. She was a Pharmaceutical in an 'apothecary' that she bought together with a friend. By 1871 he founded the first newspaper known as 'The Antwerp News', some time later the publisher went bankrupt.
ARTIST BY NATURE:
Although 'Cash' had no artistic background or formal training in the arts, he had the opportunity, aptitude and attitude to create comics for a local newspaper.
As early as 1903, Cassius was hired by the advertising agency Brown & Bigelow located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, to create an advertisement for a cigarette firm, the result of which was sixteen oil paintings in which dogs were shown in poses and human clothing, having fun, playing poker (Dogs Playing Pokers Series), billiards (Looks Like Four of a Kind), shell games, gambling associated with scams; with their peers like a good pack of friends or reading the newspaper.
Cassius was and has been the focus of inspiration for many artists.
He has been honored in films such as 'The accountant', 2016, in which there is a conversation about dogs playing poker and in which pictures of 'Cash' appear; The same thing happened in Pixar's 'Up' by including a scene of dogs playing poker.
'Cash' or Cassius Marcellus Coolidge is also credited with creating the Comics Foundgrounds or PhotoCall, those life-size panels with an oval cutout in which the head is placed to be portrayed or photographed as a funny character.
Did you know that some of his paintings were auctioned for a price of $658,000 USD?
