1.- BASIC ELEMENTS THAT YOUR DOG NEEDS AT HOME:

Having a dog in the home implies that the furniture is increased by a series of elements more or less necessary for the comfortable existence of our new friend.

We must adjust to their needs, we must not fall short or spend too much pampering.

Nor should we be victims of excessive consumerism of objects that we are not going to use.

The essentials for feeding the animal, the necessary grooming tools for its skin and hair characteristics, the necessary products for the walk, a mattress or crib for when it sleeps, a toy and good food, will be what you need. The rest are going to be extras that we fancy or that have been created as a luxury for animals.

For their food: feeder, drinker and feed.

Toiletries should be purchased with the right material and of good quality will suffice.

At Glu Glu Pet we want to remind you that hygiene products for humans are exclusively ours. Its use in the dog can cause dermatological alterations of different consideration.

2.- DOG HYGIENE, A COMPLETE ROUTINE:

Dog grooming should be a routine at home that includes: brushing hair, baths, teeth, cleaning ears and eyes.

2.1.- BRUSHING THE DOG: FIRST DAILY HYGIENE HABIT:

Dog brushing is the first required step for proper hygiene of our pet.

His walks in the park, his games and even the remains of pollutants present in the city air, dirty our pet's fur.

Brushing the dog should be a daily habit, it is the easiest way to remove dirt from its body, but also to strengthen its coat, keep its skin and the base of the hair healthy, the bristles exert a beneficial massage during brushing.

The frequency of combing can vary somewhat depending on the type of coat: curly, straight, long or short. So an animal with a tendency to have knots and tangles in its hair may even need more than one brushing a day.

The sooner you start brushing your dog, the sooner the animal will accept the hygiene of its hair as part of its daily habits. Remember that the dog is an animal of habit, the usual grooming routine can also become a way to strengthen the relationship with your animal in a positive way, accompanying the care of the coat with caresses and kind words helps it feel more comfortable.

2.2.- THE BATH IN DOG HYGIENE.

Bathing with soap and water will complete the hygiene of our dog's fur and skin.

A city dog may need a bath a month, if it has long hair, or one every two or three months, if it has short hair.

The bath water must respect the normal body temperature of the dog, which on average is about 39ºC, two degrees higher than that of people.

Avoiding direct contact of the product with the dog's eyes is another precaution to take into account.

Also make sure that no water enters their ears: cotton plugs in the dog's ears are a simple remedy to serve as a barrier.

Regarding the bathroom, you can do it from two months of age. From Glu Glu Pet, we recommend bathing the dog once a month following these steps:

  • Relax your pet by stroking it.
  • Make sure the water temperature is comfortable.
  • Wet your pet's body, not his head, with water until all his fur is completely wet.
  • Apply the shampoo and massage your entire body, avoiding the head.
  • Consult the different shampoos in Glu Glu Pet specific for each need.
  • Rinse until the water runs completely clear to avoid skin irritation.
  • Gently dry hair with a towel.
  • Brush your pet to avoid tangles and give it a neat and clean image.

But, in addition to brushing and bathing, you should know that you can find products on the market that will help your dog to have well-cared skin and coat.

The frequency of bathing depends on each dog, its habits and daily activities, but it is advisable to bathe it when it really needs it, since doing it in excess can cause the skin to lose its natural protective properties, causing dryness and irritation. Next, at Glu Glu Pet we show you three useful tips for bathing your dog.

1. Soap the dog:

You have to select a good shampoo that is specially formulated for dog skin, because they do not have the same pH as humans. Unless it is an antiparasitic shampoo, it is convenient to dilute it so that it is better distributed in the hair.

2. Rinse the dog:

Rinsing is very important. Do not leave any soap residue on the animal's skin because this can cause irritation, itching and various problems in the dermis.

After rinsing, it is advisable to apply a conditioner so that the hair is well hydrated and to facilitate brushing, since the hair will be silkier and not so many knots will form.

3. Dry the dog:

First you have to remove most of the moisture with the towel, being very careful not to tangle the hair. It is not recommended to rub the fur, it is best to squeeze it little by little. It is very important that the root dries completely, that is why it is necessary to carry out the drying thoroughly, starting with the roots until reaching the tips. To remove moisture completely, use the dryer while carefully brushing the hair.

2.2.1.- EACH DOG ITS SHAMPOO:

In the market there is a wide variety of products suitable for bathing your pet, those made for people are not suitable, since the PH of our skin is different and can harm the dog.

There are shampoos for dogs with very sensitive skin, which are prone to allergic reactions.

There are also specific ones for each type of hair: short, long, curly, dark or light. It is a matter of choosing the one that best suits the characteristics of the dog.

At Glu Glu Pet we recommend the best products for your dog's breed:

2.3.- DENTURE CARE:

Correct dental hygiene is the best way to prevent bad breath in dogs, while avoiding future infections and other ailments in the mouth such as: gum inflammation, eating difficulties or more serious diseases that can affect organs such as the kidney or liver.

A dog grooming routine that includes at least two tooth brushings a week will prevent many of these potential problems.

In the event that your dog does not like you to clean his teeth, there are special snacks for dental cleaning.

Many of the visits to the vet are caused by problems in the mouth and teeth. Periodontal disease is a very common disease that affects the teeth and the oral cavity. And not only that.

In addition, our dogs can have sensitive gums and have gingivitis or periodontitis problems, which can cause serious health problems. Dog hygiene is essential for their well-being.

Generally, these diseases are caused precisely by poor hygiene, which leads to the appearance of tartar. For this reason, we must be attentive to your mouth and watch for symptoms such as:

  • Inflammations in the gum.
  • Halitosis.
  • Bacterial plaque.
  • Loss of teeth or pus.

From 6 weeks we have to begin to get the puppy used to the fact that the practice of oral cleaning will be something habitual throughout his life. To carry it out, we must wrap a gauze around the index finger and make circular movements following this order: molars, premolars and incisors.

After a few days, when the puppy is calm, we can start using special toothpaste for dogs because they can swallow it without rinsing (ours hurts their stomach).

Finally, we will use toothbrushes for dogs or children.

2.4.- EYE HYGIENE:

Eye cleaning should not be forgotten when it comes to taking care of our pet's hygiene habits.

The appearance of annoying and unsightly rheum is easy to avoid, it is enough to use gauze moistened with physiological saline on a daily basis to eliminate them, thus preventing possible eye infections, such as conjunctivitis.

The eyes are sensitive organs to which we must pay special attention as they are prone to infections. Keep an eye on them and go to the vet if you notice variations such as:

  • Swelling.
  • redness
  • Excessive rheum or tearing.
  • Greenish mucosa.
  • dryness etc.

To keep them clean, you should take care of cleaning them daily with a sterile gauze and eye cleaner. At Glu Glu Pet we advise you which one is best for your dog.

Simply, you have to remove the legañas by gently pressing the gauze against the tear duct of the animal's eye, so that it soaks and softens.

When the crust is wet, remove it by moving from the tear duct down and out.

Remember that when you finish one eye and start the other, you must throw away the gauze and use a new one so as not to carry impurities, dirt or bacteria from one eye to the other.

2.5.- HEALTHY AND CLEAN EARS:

The dog's ears should be checked at least once a week in the case of large-eared dogs, their huge canopies block the entry of air into the ear canals, making it difficult for dirt to naturally be dragged out by the current.

In the case of the short-eared dog, cleaning the ears twice a month is sufficient.

A gauze wrapped around the index finger will help you in this task, which can be completed with the help of specific cleaning products that help remove wax from the walls of the ear canals.

The dog's ears are a very sensitive area: there are cleaning products that help remove wax.

3.- HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THE DOG'S HAIR AND SKIN:

Did you know that dirty hair is a source of serious problems such as parasites, scabies, allergies or dermatitis?

Therefore, the first thing we must take into account is the importance of brushing.

In addition to leaving your hair looking neater and cleaner, a good daily brushing will help eliminate knots, dead hair, mites and certain parasites.

To do this, we have to start by removing the dead fur with a metal bristle brush.

We make gentle movements in the opposite direction to the hairline, especially in those areas where there is more quantity: tail and back of the legs, etc.

Afterwards, we normally brush the entire body until the hair is neat and combed.

Finally, it is important that your dog is very well hydrated, as this helps combat dry skin.

3.1.- THE MOVE:

Shedding is very common among dogs and cats during the fall or spring seasons. That is why we have put together 5 important tips to help you with your hygiene and care:

1.- Daily brushing
In the moulting season, the daily brushing routine becomes more necessary. That is why it is recommended that you spend some time each day to comb your pet. In this way you will remove dead hair and prevent it from filling the whole house with hair later. Plus, you'll bond with her through grooming moments!

2.- Use a suitable brush
For brushing to be effective and properly remove dead hair and dirt, it is important to have the right tool:

  • Bristle Brush: This soft bamboo bristle brush is gentle on pets' skin and works great for all breeds and sizes.
  • Glove: thanks to its soft silicone material, your pets will enjoy a relaxing and pleasant massage while stimulating blood circulation. The glove will help you effectively remove dirt, grime, dander and loose hair from your pet thanks to the five-finger motion.
  • Smoothing brush: it is suitable for animals with medium and long fur, but not for those with very short hair since the teeth of the brush are a bit thin and can be sharp for them. An advice! You should not brush him too hard because you could hurt him and you should make sure there are no cuts or wounds before brushing.
  • Escarpidor: it is very soft with our pet's skin and is appropriate for animals with single or double coats.

3.- Offer a balanced diet:
In both dog food and cat food, a diet low in grains and rich in animal protein and omega 3 oil will help your pet's hair grow much stronger.

4.- Bathe him:
A good bath with specialized shampoo and at a comfortable temperature will serve to remove abundant dead hair and relax your pet.

5.- Clean the house
So that it does not fill the house with hair, it is advisable to clean the bed and blanket that your pet uses. You can use a mop to clean the hair or the vacuum to remove the hair from the carpet and the floor.

4.- HOW TO CLEAN THE EARS FOR A GOOD HYGIENE OF THE DOGS:

By frequently cleaning the ears and ears of our dogs we can avoid otitis and possible infections.

To proceed, we can help ourselves with a cotton swab and a few drops of Frontline Ear Cleaner.

We must lift the ear to clean the outside of the inner face of the ear, gently but without fear, since, as the cotton is hydrated, our dog will not feel any discomfort.

Next, we introduce the swab towards the inner part of the ear and slightly inclined downwards.

We can do it calmly because our pets' ears are not like ours, but end in an 'L' shape, so the swab will never hurt them.

To finish, a little massage.

5.-HOW TO KEEP YOUR PUPPY CLEAN WITHOUT BATHING IT:

Having a puppy at home is an experience that is not forgotten.

There will be days of pranks and anecdotes, but there must also be time for discipline and the establishment of a series of rules in the house.

Although in the current state of alarm situation due to the coronavirus pandemic, we must be more responsible with the hygiene of our pet:

  • Short walks and avoid socializing the dog with other dogs or with other people.
  • After returning from the walk, clean the pads, the tail and the snout with soap and water.
  • Do not enter the house with street shoes and wash your hands thoroughly.

While it's time to bathe your puppy there are many things you can do to keep your puppy clean at home.

Use pet wipes.

Sanitary wipes for puppies are very practical. They fit in any bag and can be very useful on countless occasions. Use them anytime your puppy shows up with a dirty nose or paws, you just have to take them out and clean your little friend, always avoiding the eyes.

5.1.- DRY CLEANING:

If you're bothered by the "doggy smell" that most puppies have, you can massage your puppy's coat with a dry shampoo. Leave it for 5 minutes to take effect and then brush it to remove the product.

It is ideal for you to use between washes and keep your puppy free from excess fat and bad odours. Your hair will be clean, soft and perfumed.

5.2.- CLEAN ALL YOUR DOG'S OBJECTS:

It makes no sense to keep your puppy very neat and his things dirty, so it is also important that you make sure that his bed, his toys and his feeders are always clean.

It is also convenient that you allocate a place in the house for him to relieve himself, try to make it far from his food. Put underpads in the area you decide so that he learns that he has to do it there.

Just like you wash your face every morning, your puppy also needs you to remove the legañas daily.

6.- CUT YOUR DOG'S NAILS:

Dogs used to walking around cities tend to suffer from natural wear on their nails and it is not usually necessary to cut them more often.

In cases where dogs walk less or spend more time indoors, we will have to pay more attention to this aspect of their hygiene.

To do this, we have to make sure we use the right accessories and we should not use scissors or nail clippers that are not specifically for pets. We must also accustom the animals to this practice little by little, since it can cost some of them.

To get our pets used to cutting their nails, we have to make sure that they do not see nail clippers as a harmful element. For example, we can caress their paw with it or let them smell it so they lose their fear. At first, we will only have to cut a small portion of the nail so as not to cause any damage.

When we make sure that the dog is quite still, we will hold its leg and carefully make the cut, always being careful not to reach the root of the nail that is inside it, as this could cause bleeding and great pain to the animal. If this happened, it would be necessary to press on the wound until the sacred stops if it occurs. Special care must be taken when the nails are black since that root is not easily seen.

In the case of dogs with white hair, it is much easier to differentiate the different parts of the nail. The root zone usually has a darker tone and the nail itself is usually light white.

Another point to take into account are the ears of the puppies. From time to time it is good to clean the inside of the ear with a specific cleaner for dog ears. Be very careful as their ears are sensitive inside, just like ours! You can also use the wipes to clean his ears. Pay attention to these tips to clean your dog's eyes and ears.

Take care of your oral hygiene
Good oral health is important to complete the general cleaning of your puppy. Nobody wants to be around a dog with bad breath. Dental sticks are an easy way to keep your teeth clean and prevent future tartar problems. Give them as a reward when they behave well.
