The amber tetra is a fish that comes from the waters of the Araguaia River and its different tributaries in Brazil, where it passes through slow-flowing waters, lakes and even lives in areas of stagnant water, which gives it a certain tolerance to a relatively low level of dissolved oxygen in the water and a certain hardness when it comes to maintenance.
Common name: Amber Tetra.
Scientific name:Hyphessobrycon amandae.
Family: Characins.
Temperature: 24 – 28 ºC (optimal 27 ºC).
Maximum size: 2.5 cm.
pH: 5.5 – 6.5.
Kh: 0 – 1ºKh.
Gh: 1 – 3 ºGh (although it supports higher degrees).
Diet: Omnivorous.
Temperament: It is very similar to the neon tetra, since it is very peaceful and lives in groups of at least 8-10 individuals to have a sense of security and thus avoid stress.
Sexual dimorphism: It is very difficult to distinguish them except in their breeding season, where it can be seen that the female is larger and the male more colorful.
Curiosities and observations: Fish with bright colors such as the amber tetra, whose chromatophores give the scales that special color, have the advantage of being able to use this color as an indicator of well-being, since if the color of the fish pales we must check the environment and the parameters because something is making them feel bad, be it stress from living in conflict with a harassing species or having unhealthy ammonium values in the aquarium.
